Why your location is not updating on Tinder or Bumble

Dating apps read your location on their own schedule, not the moment you move. Most stuck locations are that schedule, and most of the rest are a permission.

Tinder and Bumble mostly update your location when the app is open. After you move, or after the location your phone reports changes, the old location usually stays until you open the app and it takes a fresh reading. If it still will not change, the cause is almost always a location permission on the iPhone, or the app’s own travel feature overriding it.

How dating apps read your location

When you open the app, it asks iOS for a position and stores it on its servers as your location. That stored position is what other people’s distances are measured from and what decides who you are shown. Most dating apps ask for location “While Using the App”, which means they cannot update it in the background at all.

So your location in a dating app is a snapshot. It is taken when you open the app, and it stays until the next one.

If your location will not update

  1. Open the app and give it a minute. Leave it on screen rather than glancing at it.
  2. Close it properly and open it again. Swipe it out of the app switcher, then reopen it. That forces a fresh reading rather than the one it already had.
  3. Check its location permission. Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, then the app. It should be on “While Using the App” or “Always”, with Precise Location on. With Precise Location off, the app gets a broad area rather than a point, and your distance to other people is correspondingly vague.
  4. Turn off the app’s own travel feature. Tinder’s Passport and Bumble’s Travel mode set a location inside the app, and while they are on they take priority over what the phone reports.
  5. Check your connection and any VPN. A VPN does not change your GPS location, but it does change the IP address the app sees, and an app that notices the two disagree may behave strangely. What a VPN changes and what it does not explains why.
  6. Wait. A new location can take a while to be reflected in who you are shown. Neither app says how long.

Why the location jumps back

An app stores whatever the phone reported the last time it looked. If the location changed back, even briefly, while the app was open, the app may have kept the real one. The usual causes:

When a fake GPS location is not working on Bumble

“Bumble fake GPS not working” is a common search, and the answer is usually one of four things:

The Tinder and Bumble guides each have a section on where people get into trouble, and it is worth reading before you change anything.

A word on honesty

Moving your location to meet people in a city you are about to visit is exactly what the paid travel features exist for. Misleading matches about where you live is how accounts get reported. If your location is somewhere you are not, say so in your profile.

Where PinDrift fits

PinDrift changes the location the iPhone reports to iOS, so Tinder and Bumble see it the same way as any other app, and the checklist above still applies. In desktop mode the computer has to stay reachable. In mobile mode, the PinDrift iPhone app holds the location on the phone by itself. Neither makes a change invisible to an app, and we do not claim otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t my location update on Bumble?

Bumble mostly reads your location when the app is open. Close it fully, reopen it, and check that its location permission is on with Precise Location enabled. If Travel mode is on, it overrides your phone’s location until you turn it off.

How do I refresh my location on Tinder?

Make sure Location Services is on for Tinder with Precise Location enabled, then close Tinder from the app switcher and open it again so it takes a fresh reading. If Passport is on, Tinder uses the Passport location instead.

Does a VPN change my location on Tinder?

No. Tinder uses your phone’s GPS location, and a VPN only changes your IP address. An app that notices the two disagree may behave oddly, so a VPN can cause problems without changing where you appear.

Why does my dating app show the wrong distance?

Distances are measured between each person’s last stored locations, which can be hours old on either side, and ordinary GPS error adds to it. Precise Location being off makes it much vaguer still.

Can Tinder or Bumble tell if I change my location?

They may notice signs such as sudden jumps or an IP address in a different place, but neither publishes what it checks. Nobody can honestly promise that a change will go unnoticed.

Ellis writes the guides here. Mostly that means reading Apple’s developer documentation so you do not have to, and testing what the tracking apps actually do rather than what their marketing says they do.
